Portland RYC recap, Sep. 10-11, 2022

September 12, 2022

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope everyone had a great weekend, because we had an amazing weekend! :)

Please help me to congratulate all our competitors and medal winners from this past weekend.

4 of our fencers (Aiza, Victoria, Ben and Alex) competed this weekend at a regional tournament in Tigard, OR and 3 of them brought home medals.

At regional tournaments, top 8 competitors receive medals.

I can't describe in words how proud I am of my fencers, their supporting families and of course my hard work with my athletes. It takes more than a village to grow athletes :)

The final results are:

Y12 women's foil - Aiza finished #6.

Y10 women's foil - Victoria and Aiza tied for 3rd place and both received bronze.

Y14 men's foil - Alex finished #8 with an extremely great fencing performance. Alex especially, proved to all of us that the impossible, became very possible and real!

Ben also fenced this weekend but he did not win a medal. But he took on the challenge, tried hard and learned a big deal from this experience which is not any less important than winning a medal.

Parents and students, feel free to stop by anytime this week to congratulate our competitors and ask to see their beautiful medals :) I am pretty sure they will be proud and happy to tell you everything about their experience.

Story behind the successful performance and result:

None of these wins and medals came in easily. Exactly one year ago, I took my beginner fencers to their first regional tournament and they were not counting wins, but they were counting single touches and got excited about every single point scored.

One year later (I mean this weekend), in exactly the same event, my fencers stood on the podium holding their rightfully achieved medals.

- So what does this experience and progressions tell us?

None of these results and medals came easily to anyone competing. My competitive fencers train 3-4 nights a week, at least 2 hours each class, take private lessons, and compete at many tournaments throughout the year including local, regional and national. On average most serious fencers go 1-2 tournaments per month and sometimes more.

Just so you understand, Regional events are not easy at all. These events allow fencers to score regional points and allow them to qualify for national events, and national events will allow them to try and qualify for the national team.

Sometimes when I talk to parents about medals, qualifying for something or making a team.. Most parents don't believe it is realistic and they don't believe it is possible. But let me tell you, IT IS POSSIBLE! It does take work, commitment and consistent training, but it is absolutely real and it is possible!

August Summer Camp 2022

August 28, 2022

Another fun Summer Fencing Camp came to an end. Beginner fencers came to try fencing in the first time; while our intermediate level fencers joined the group to prepare for the new season as well and show the beginners some advanced skills, equipment and electric fencing.
During the camp kids developed physical, cognitive and mental skills and abilities.
Physical skills were developed by playing games, learning about fencing and executing lessons learned during real fencing bouts. In the cognitive aspect, campers learned to analyze their opponents and plan their actions during group and individual games and fencing bouts.
Campers learned and experienced so much during our camp that it is very difficult to convey in just one paragraph. Come join us, and you will see by yourself what it is like to be a fencer :)
